Whole numbers are a set of numbers including the set of natural numbers (1 to infinity) and the integer '0'. A whole number is called whole because it is not a mixed fraction or any rational number, but can be represented as a 'complete number'(excluding the negative integers). Zero is the smallest whole number. The whole number series is 0,1,2,3,4... The integers are ...,-4,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4... The natural numbers are 1,2,3,4...

A writing method for expressing numbers is called a "numeral system". In the most common numeral system, we write numbers with combinations of 10 symbols {0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9}. These symbols are called digits, and numbers that are expressed using 10 digits are called "decimal" or "base-10" numbers. The classification of numbers systems on the basis of base can be understood from the below diagram. Thus, we have four major types of number systems that are binary, decimal, octal and hexadecimal.
