Lakes and johads were made to collect precious drops of rain water. Some water from the lakes soaked into the ground and reached the wells and bavdis (stepwell) in that area. The soil of the area also became wet and fertile.

Darki Mai lived in a village in the Alwar district of Rajasthan. The women of the village used to spend the entire day looking after their home and animals. Sometimes, it took them all night to pull water from the well for the animals. In the summer, when the wells dried up, they had to leave the village.

A well is said to have gone dry when water levels drop below a pump intake. This does not mean that a dry well will never have water in it again, as the water level may come back through time as aquifer recharge from precipitation seepage increases and/or pumping of the aquifer is lessened. It is true that all the water in the ground comes from infiltration of precipitation from above, but the geology of the underground rock determines the infiltration and movement characteristics of the water that is in the ground.

Al-biruni was a traveller from Uzbekistan who came to India more than a thousand years ago. He wrote that the Indians were very skilled at making ponds. they piled up huge rocks joined with iron rods to build chabutaras around the lake. there were rows of staircases going up and down. the steps for going up and coming down were separate. So there was less crowding.

There are several features of birds that help them to fly
- They have hollow bones .
- They have wings that help them to fly .
- They have a streamlined body that makes them light weight and make them fly in the air .
- They have powerful muscles .
Naveen Sharma 8 years, 11 months ago
Ans. Flying birds have:
- lightweight, smooth feathers, this reduces the forces of weight and drag
- A Beak: instead of heavy, bony jaws and teeth, this reduces the force of weight
- an enlarged breastbone called a sternum for flight muscle attachment – this helps with the force of thrust
- Light Bones : a bird’s bones are basically hollow with air sacs and thin, tiny cross pieces to make bones stronger, this reduces the force of weight
- A rigid skeleton to provide firm attachments for powerful flight muscles, this helps with the force of thrust
- A streamlined body : this helps reduce the force of drag
- Wings: these enable the force of lift.
