When plenty of water is available in the soil, plants will absorb water through its roots. This water will be used by the plant or released through transpiration by open stomata in the leaves. Photosynthesis will also occur normally with CO2 and oxygen being absorbed and released through the open stomata.

The animals  that live on land, are said to be living in the terrestrial habitat and the adaptation to land environment is called adaptation in terrestrial animal

Adaptation in aerial animals

  • An aerial habitat is a living space above the ground such as in the treetops of a forest.
  • Organisms which are capable to do their activities in the air or in an aerial environment are called aerial or arboreal organisms.
  • Insects, bats and birds are some of the aerial organisms

Adaptation in aquatic animals

  • Aquatic animals are adapted to movement in the water and in obtaining oxygen from water for respiration.
  • Many among the sea animals have streamlined bodies which help them to move easily in saline water.
  • The body of fishes is boat-shaped or streamlined which allows them to cut through water and swim faster by reducing the resistance due to flowing water.
  • Amphibians have strong hind legs for hopping and catching their prey which help them to survive on land.

Adaptation in aerial plants

Plants which grow on another plant or object merely for physical support are called epiphytes or air plants. Epiphytic orchids, mangroves and palms can survive in the aerial habitat.

  • Epiphytic orchids have aerial roots which cling to the host plant. They absorb minerals and water from the atmosphere with the help of velamen tissue which covers their roots.
  • The velamen tissue protects the roots and prevents water loss.
  • Epiphytic orchids have adaptations such as thick, waxy or leathery leaves which help them survive in this unique environment.

Adaptation in Mountain plants

  • Mountain trees grow close to the ground to avoid being uprooted by strong winds.
  • The trees are usually cone-shaped with sloping branches which allows rainwater and snow to slide off easily without damaging the branches and leaves.
  • The trees are flowerless. In place of flowers, they have cones with seeds inside them.
  • The trees have small, needle-shaped leaves to minimise the loss of water in windy conditions. The needle-like leaves have a thick waxy cuticle to reduce the loss of water through transpiration and protect them from damage caused by rain and snow.
