Digestion begins in the mouth, well before food reaches the stomach. When we see, smell, taste, or even imagine a tasty meal, our salivary glands in front of the ear, under the tongue, and near the lower jaw begin making saliva (spit).

Shedding leaves helps trees to conserve water and energy. As unfavorable weather approaches, hormones in the trees trigger the process of abscission whereby the leaves are actively cut-off of the tree by specialized cells.

Gaurav Seth 3 years, 8 months ago

It is very energetically expensive for a tree to carry out photosynthesis in the winter, when there is often little sunlight and freezing temperatures make water transport (from the ground into the tree’s trunk and leaves) a problem. So it’s more energy efficient for a leafy tree to close down operations in the winter and go dormant.

During winter, light, heat, water and minerals become less available. The plants then begin to get rid of the leaves by discontinuing the flow of food to leaves. And once the supply of food to leaves is closed off, these leaves begin to change their colour and with the passage of time fall off.

Some of the daily life examples of living things around us are human beings, animals, plants and micro organisms. Non-livings things do not exhibit any characteristics of life. They do not grow, respire, need energy, move, reproduce, evolve, or maintain homeostasis. These things are made up of non-living materials.

Fish “hear” by picking up pressure changes and vibrations in the water through a lateral line (a system of thousands of tiny hair cells that run the length of a fish's body and work as a sensory organ) along each side of their body. The lateral line helps a fish to find and capture food and avoid enemies. Some bony fishes, such as anchovies (family Engraulidae) are filter feeders. They strain plankton from the water with gill rakers. Many bony fishes, including catfishes (Family Ictaluridae) are adapted for bottom feeding. A species' particular mouth shape and teeth are adapted to accommodate a particular diet.

Yogita Ingle 3 years, 10 months ago

Chlorophyll is a chemical found in the chloroplasts of plants that allows the plant to absorb light.
Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in almost all plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. It absorbs light most strongly in the blue portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, followed by the red portion.
