Plants do not breathe, so they need to get oxygen through the stomata, the small little holes in their leaves, and also through their roots. In respiration, the oxygen is used to help metabolize and burn the sugars into energy. Plants do breathe - they give out carbon dioxide and absorb oxygen from the air that surrounds them. The parts above the soil get their oxygen directly from the air through pores. The pores in the leaves are called stomata. Oxygen and carbon dioxide pass in and out of the stomata in the plants through diffusion. When the plant is submerged in the water, bubbles of oxygen or carbon dioxide released are trapped and they stick on the leaves or petals temporarily.

Bud, Small lateral or terminal protuberance on the stem of a vascular plant that may develop into a flower, leaf, or shoot. Buds arise from meristem tissue. In temperate climates, trees form resting buds that are resistant to frost in preparation for winter. Flower buds are modified leaves. As the apical meristem grows and forms leaves, it leaves behind a region of meristematic cells at the node between the stem and the leaf. These axillary buds are usually dormant, inhibited by auxin produced by the apical meristem, which is known as apical dominance.
