The continuous process by which water is circulated throughout the earth and the atmosphere through evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and the transpiration of plants and animals. Also called the hydrologic cycle. The water cycle is defined as the way that water moves between being water vapour to liquid water and then back to water vapour. An example of the water cycle is when water evaporates from oceans and then returns to the land in the form of rain.

Water pollution: The contamination of water bodies such as rivers, lakes, etc. due to several contaminants being discharged in them, directly or indirectly, is known as water pollution.
Three causes of the water pollution are
- Increase in population and urban settlements have polluted the rivers. Large amount of domestic, municipal and agricultural wastes are disposed off in the rivers.
- Huge quantities of untreated sewage and industrial effluents are disposed in rivers which not only diminishes the quality of water but also the self-cleansing capacity of the river.
- Dumping of used oil and paints into river water has also polluted the river.
