कारखानों की स्थापना के क्रम में सन् 1830-40 के दशक में बंगाल में द्वारकानाथ टैगोर ने 6 संयुक्त उद्यम कम्पनियाँ लगाई। सर्वप्रथम सूती कपड़े की मिल की नींव 1851 ई. में बम्बई में डाली गई। सन् 1917 में कलकत्ता में देश का पहला जूट मिल एक मारवाड़ी व्यवसायी हुकुम चंद ने स्थापित किया।
