(a+b) ^2 means (a+b)*(a+b)
So (a+b)*(a+b)=a*(a+b) + b*(a+b)
On solving the brackets :
a*(a+b) + b*(a+b)
=(a*a) +(a*b) +(b*a) +(b*b)
=a^2 + ab + ba + b^2
=a^2 + 2ab + b^2
So, (a+b) ^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2
