If the distance between the plates of a charged capacitor is decreased, how would be the potential difference between the plates affected?

As we know that the capacitance of a capacitor C = QV where Q is the charge stored in the capacitor and V is the potential difference applied .
Now if we decrease the distance between the plates of  a capacitor then the charge stored in the capacitor will increase so in order to remain the capacitance same the potential difference between the plates will decrease .
