Ans.  Emergency was like a vaccination against dictatorship. It was painful and caused fever, but strengthened the resistance of our democracy.

  • Emergency brought out weakness and strengths of our constitution.
  • Brought ambiguities regarding emergency provisions of constitution which were ratified by 44 constitution amendment in which the phrase internal disturbances was replaced by armed rebellion and written advice of cabinet was necessary for proclaiming emergency.
  • Created awareness among masses about civil liberties.
  • Administration of police became more vulnerable to state influence.
  • Right to life and liberty granted by constitution can not be taken away by state in any circumstances --44 constitutional amendment after emergency.
  • People showed their faith in democracy by :
    By electing Morarji desai government at centre.
    Elected new regional leaders in states by throwing out congress government from office.
    These emergency played a role in starting a unique process in India in which judges started appointing judges.

    considering all these points, We can say that Emergency was Like a vaccination against dictatorship.
