So, the derivation begins with the definition for critical angle for a particular medium which is defined as the angle of incidence from a particular medium at the interface above which the refracted ray gets reflected internally (TIR) to the same medium without any loss of energy. At critical angle, <r = 90°. Therefore, refractive index of air with respect to medium n = sin <i / sin < r = sin c / sin 90° = sin c. Therefore, refractive index of medium = (sin C) ^-1.
