Khilafat Movement was started by Muhammad Ali and Shaukat Ali at Bombay in 1919. The First World War had ended with the defeat of Ottoman Turkey and there were rumours that Britain was going to impose a harsh treaty on the khalifa, the spiritual head of the islamic world. So to protect khalifa's temporal powers and to get the Purna Swaraj as demanded by Gandhiji and Congress, this movement was launched .

Ali brothers launched khilafat movement and gives the key of movement to Mahatma Gandhi and Mahatma Gandhi started it for jallianwala massacre swaraj and khilafat issue.
