Active transport is the movement of ions or molecules from a region of lower concentration across a cell membrane into a region of higher concentration. Active transport is assisted by enzymes. Since the direction of active transport is against a concentration gradient, the cell expends energy in active transport. Active transport is one of the three main types of movement in a cell viz. diffusion, osmosis and active transport.
