The message that the story conveys can be: (i) Don't leave work for tomorrow thinking that I will get much more time for same. As Franz didn't paid attention towards his lessons thinking that its difficult I will do it later but on the last day when he tried to listen lessons carefully everything seemed too easy for him. (ii) A person belonging to any place must respect his/her land and mother language. (iii) No one in this world can control nature. German won the battle and took over Alsace and Lorraine and ordered to teach only German in schools. Franz thought "Will they make them sing in German? Even the Pigeons". This line tells us that nature has its own way.

The main msg was that one should respect their language and should know well about it. Native language is which unites the people of a country. Blah blah blah
