Types of Decomposition Reactions Decomposition reactions can be classified into three types: Thermal decomposition reaction Electrolytic decomposition reaction Photo decomposition reaction Thermal decomposition is a chemical reaction where a single substance breaks into two or more simple substances when heated. The reaction is usually endothermic because heat is required to break the bonds present in the substance. Examples: Photo decomposition is a chemical reaction in which a substance is broken down into simple substances by exposure to light (photons).

A reaction in which a single reactant breaks down to from two or more products is known as decomposition reaction . There are three types of decomposition reaction. 1) Thermal decomposition - These reaction use the energy in the from of heat for decomposition of the reactant . Example - 2FeSO4 - Fe2SO3 + SO2 + So3. 2) Electrolysis - These reactions involve the use of electrical energy for the decomposition of the reactant molecules Example - 2H2O - 2H2 + O2. 3) photolysis - These reaction involve the use of light energy for the purpose of decomposition . Example - 2AgCl - 2Ag + Cl2
