The Cell Theory is one of the basic principles of biology proposed by the scientists Theodor Schwann, Matthias Schleiden, and Rudolph Virchow.
It states that
i) All living organisms are composed of cells.
ii) The cell is the basic unit of life.
Cells arise from pre-existing cells.

Mathias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann in 1838 postulated Cell Theory.
The Cell Theory states that:
- All living organisms are formed of one or more cells.
- New cells arise from pre-existing cells by cell division.
- Cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function in living organism.
