Because conventionally it is believed that the current flows from positive to negative direction of the battery.....(ie starts from the positive terminal). Hence as we know that the electrons are attracted towards the positive sides....from here the scientists concluded that the direction of current is opposite to the direction of electrons. It is an old convention to take direction of current to be opposite to the direction of electron,ie in the direction of proton....But the actual fact is that the direction of current is actually in the direction of flow of electrons...
