• Atoms of elements can be broken down into simplier substances. that is certainly true...atoms are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons... which can be broken down into quarks, muons, gluons, etc... which call all broken down into superstrings...etc... which are simply packets of energy.. 
  
  if you have been watching the news lately, CERN is a research center in Geneva that started operations of their large hadron collider. That collider is designed to smash two protons (hydrogen atoms without the electrons) at tremendous velocities which will generate a spray of subatomic particles.
