Because sulphur is polyatomic or oxygen is diatomic

Yupp! Vaishnavi thank u ?

Hey shreya i got what u said.actually i typed a little wrong.the o-o bond at room temp is weeker than sulphur.plzz do correct this in your mind. Secondly u mentioned lone pair ...basically this bond is weeker just because of lone pair on oxygen which causes repulsions and makes its bond dissociation enthalpy less than that of sulphur...and hence does not show catenation... Hope this clears your doubt...

Thank u so much .Ur reply releaved me. About my text? thanks again shruti?

Ooops! Sorry, Shreya i didn't saw your text. Btw what you said about oxygen is absolutely correct but in some cases we go for more appropriate answers !

I am asking is what i have texted abt lone pair is correct or not. I am not asking abt.sulphur i am asking abt oxygen..hope u understand

Sulphur shows greater catination cuz' it has vacant d orbit and bond between S-S at room temperature is much weaker leads to formation of catination.

Harshil Parashar 4 years, 2 months ago

What u said i got ur point. But isn't it about lone pair presence on oxygen due to which repulsion occurs. If not then why ..pplz help me out this

Avantika Tayal 4 years, 2 months ago

Oxygen due to its small size, highest electronegativity and absence of vacant d orbital do not form catenated chain of oxocompounds.but sulphur has vacant d orbital.moreover s-s bond at room tp is weeker so exist as catnated compounds.

Because of increasing bond enthalpy???
