Why did tooth decay when pH value below 5.5 ?

Tooth decay starts when oh is 5.5 because of acid present in it. Bacteria produce acids by degradation of sugar and food particles remaining in the mouth. Therefore calcium phosphate does not dissolve in water but is corroded when the pH of mouth is below 5.5.
