Cleavage is a series of rapid cell divisions without cell growth or gene expression which occurs in early embryogenesis. During cleavage, the cytoplasm is divided into smaller and smaller cells, called blastomeres. Four major holoblastic cleavage types can be observed in general: radial, spiral, bilateral, and rotational. Egg cells that have larger quantities of yolk undergo meroblastic cleavage after fertilization, in which only a portion of the zygote undergoes cleavage.

Characteristics of the cleavage stage.

  • It is a period of unparalleled rapid cell division.
  • There is no growth between divisions and the nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio decreases about 1000 fold.
  • There are unusual cell cycles lacking, or having very short, G1 and G2 phases.
  • Cytokinesis can be unequal.
