The refractive index of diamond is very high (2.417). The diamond is cut and polished with several facets.
Light enters from all sides of the diamond and bounces off several facets before leaving. The farther the light travels before leaving, the more it separates into the rainbow of colors that make it up. A diamond's dazzling sparkle is a result of the light's bouncing travel inside it
