Saving per memebr varies from ₹25-₹100 or more, depending on the ability of the people to save. Members can take small loams from the group itself to meet their needs. The group charges interest on these loans which is lesser than what the moneylender charges. After a year or two, when the group is regular in savings,mit becomes eligible for availaing a loan frim the bank.

Self help groups help in providing loans to the poor. The idea is to organise rural poor, in particular women, into self helf groups and pool their savings. A typical SHG has 15-20 members, usually belonging to more than one neighborhood, who meet and save regularly.
