Let I be the current through the circuit. Let V be the p.d. It is possible to replace 3 resistirs joined in series (R1,R2,R3)through equivalent single resistance R. By applying Ohm's law to equivalent single resistance we have; V=IR ----(1) also appylying Ohm's law to separate individual resistance we have; V=IR1 ---(2) V=IR2 ---(3) V=IR3 ---(4) From eq. (1),(2),(3),(4) we have; IR= IR1+ IR2+IR3 Therefore; R=R1+R2+R3 Rs= R1+R2+R3 (Where Rs denotes resistors that are joined in series).
