Two trains A and B of length 400m each are moving on two parallel tracks with uniform speed of 72km/hr in the same direction with A ahead of B . The driver of B decides to overtake A and accelerates by 1m/s. If after 50sec the guard of B just rushes past the driver of A. What was the original distance between them ?

suppose initially the distance between the gaurd of A and driver of B be x

initial speed of trains = 72 km/hr = 200m/s

Distance travelled by train A in 50 sec is S1= 200 X 50=10000m

Distance travelled by train B in 50 sec is S2= 200X50+(1/2)1X502=11250m

for the initial distance x between trains

                 x+400+400=11250-10000

                   x+800=1250

                  x=1250-800

              x=450m

hence the initial distance between the guard of A and driver of B is 450m
