Define modulation index? why is it kept low? What is the role of bandmass filter!?

Modulation index is the ratio of amplitude of message signal to the amplitude of carrier wave. It is kept low so that no distortion will occur(<=1). Bandpass filter rejects dc and sinusoids of higher and lower frequency and allows a band of frequency.
