    Let AB be the tree. When broken at C, let its top touch the ground at D. Then BC=5m and BD=12m. Note that CD=AC. In ∆BCD, angle B=90°. By Pythagoras property, CD(2)=BD(2 )+ BC(2) CD(2)=12(2) + 5(2) CD(2)= 144 + 25 CD= 13m Original height of tree =AC= BC+CA= BC+CD =5m+13m= 18m
