Valency is defined as the combining capacity of the atom of an element. To find valency, first you must know the number of valence electrons in it. The electrons present in the outermost shell of an atom are valence electrons.
When the number of valence electrons are 1,2 and 3 valency of the atom is 1,2 and 3 respectively.
In case, the valence electrons are 4 valency=4
When the valence electrons are 5,6,7,8 valency = 8- no.of valence electrons present in the outermost shell.
Every atom can have maximum of 8 electrons in its outermost shell in order to attain noble gas configuration.
Hope this helps.

Ans. The valency of an atom is equal to the number of electrons in the outer shell if that number is four or less. Otherwise, the valency is equal to eight minus the number of electrons in the outer shell. Once you know the number of electrons, you can easily calculate the valency.
