On the eve of independence Indian economy was in very bad shape due to the presence of British colonial rule.<br \/>\nThe sole purpose of the British colonial rule in India was to reduce the country to being a feeder economy for Great Britain\u2019s own rapidly expanding modern industrial base. Thus, in 1947, when British transferred power back to India, we inherited a crippled economy.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conditions_in_the_Indian_economy_on_the_eve_of_independence\"><\/span><strong>Conditions in the Indian economy on the eve of independence:<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>(i) Low level of economic development:<\/strong> The colonial govt., never made any sincere attempt to estimate India\u2019s national and percapita income.<br \/>\nThe estimates given by Dr. V.K.R.V. Rao suggested that\u00a0growth rate of GDP was about 2% per annum while the growth of per capita output was just 1\/2 (0.5) percent per annum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(ii) Backward agricultural sector:<\/strong> Due to<br \/>\nA. Land tenure system- Zamindari system, Mahalwari system and Ryotwari system.<br \/>\nB. Forced commercialisation of Agriculture<br \/>\nC. Partition of the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(iii) Less developed Industrial sector<\/strong><br \/>\nA. De-industrialization- Decline of Indian handicraft industry.<br \/>\nB. Capital good industries were lacking<br \/>\nC. Limited operation of public sector<br \/>\nD. Discriminatory tariff policy.<br \/>\nE. Competition from Machine made products<br \/>\nF. Introduction of Railways in India<br \/>\nG. Lack of Heavy and Basic Industries<\/p>\n<p><strong>(iv) Foreign trade characteristic<\/strong><br \/>\nA. Net exporter of raw material and importer of finished good.<br \/>\nB. Britain had the monopoly control on foreign trade.<br \/>\nC. Drain of India\u2019s wealth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(v) Adverse demographic condition<\/strong><br \/>\nA. High death and Birth rate-40 and 48 per thousand respectively.<br \/>\nB. High infant mortality rate-218 per thousand.<br \/>\nC. Mass Illiteracy-84% illiterate.<br \/>\nD. Low life expectancy- 44\u00a0years<br \/>\nE. Low standard of living- People used to spend 80% to 90% of their income on basic needs.<br \/>\nF. Lack of public health facilities<br \/>\nG. Female Literacy level was about 7%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(vi) Underdeveloped infrastructure<\/strong><br \/>\nAbsence of good roads, electricity generation, health, education and communication. However, some efforts have been made to develop basic infra-structure like roads, railways, ports, water transport, post &amp; telegraph by the British rulers. The main motive was not to provide basic amenities to the Indian people but for their colonial interest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(vii) More dependence on primary sector<\/strong><br \/>\nLargest share of work force which was 72% was engaged in agriculture.<br \/>\n10% in manufacturing while 18% workforce were engaged in service sector.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Some_positive_side-effects_of_the_British_rule_in_India\"><\/span><strong>Some positive side-effects of the British rule in India<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A.
