This method is used to determine the nutrients essential for plants.<\/li>\n<li>In this method plant is cultured in soil-free, defined mineral solution. These methods require <strong>purified water<\/strong> and <strong>mineral nutrients<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Essential elements are identified and their deficiency symptoms are discovered by hydroponics methods. It is also used for commercial production of vegetables, like tomato and cucumber.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-mycbseguide.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/static\/revise\/11\/biology\/11_Bio_ch12_01.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Essential mineral nutrients- <\/strong>About 65 elements are found in different plants. Etc.<\/li>\n<li>Act as major constituents of macromolecules and co-enzymes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Various forms and function of essential nutrients-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Nitrogen- <\/strong>required by plants in greatest amount, it is absorbed by plants as NO<sub>2<\/sub><sup>&#8211;<\/sup>, NO<sub>3<\/sub><sup>&#8211;<\/sup> and NH<sub>4<\/sub><sup>+<\/sup> <strong>. <\/strong>It is one of the major constituent of proteins, nucleic acids and vitamins.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phosphorus- <\/strong>Absorbed by plants from soil in the form of phosphate ions. It is the constituent of cell membrane. All nucleic acids and nucleotides require phosphorus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Potassium \u2013 <\/strong>absorbed as potassium ions (K<sup>+<\/sup>). Help to maintain cation-anion balance in cells. It is involved in protein synthesis, opening and closing of stomata.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Calcium \u2013<\/strong> absorbed by plants from soil in form of Calcium ions (Ca<sup>2+<\/sup>). Used in synthesis of cell wall. It activates certain enzymes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Magnesium-<\/strong> absorbed by plants in form of Mg<sup>2+<\/sup> ions. It activates the enzymes for respiration, photosynthesis, and involved in synthesis of DNA and RNA. It is constituent of chlorophyll.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sulphur- <\/strong>plants obtain sulphur in form of sulphate (SO<sub>4<\/sub><sup>2-<\/sup>). Present in amino acids (cysteine, methionine) and is main constituent of coenzymes and vitamins.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Iron- <\/strong>obtained in the form of ferric iron (Fe<sup>3+<\/sup>). It is important constituent of protein involved in transport system.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manganese-<\/strong>absorbed in form of Mn<sup>2+<\/sup> ions. Main function is splitting of water to liberate Hydrogen and Oxygen during photosynthesis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Zinc-<\/strong>obtained as Zn<sup>2+<\/sup> ions. Activate enzymes like carboxylases. Needed in formation of Auxin.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Copper \u2013<\/strong>absorbed as cupric ions(Cu<sup>2+<\/sup>). Involved in various metabolic activities and redox reactions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Boron-<\/strong>absorbed as BO<sub>3<\/sub><sup>3-<\/sup> or B<sub>4<\/sub>O<sub>7<\/sub><sup>2-<\/sup> ions. Required for uptake of calcium, cell elongation and pollen germination.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chlorine \u2013<\/strong> it is absorbed in form of Cl<sup>&#8211;<\/sup> ions. Determine the solute concentration and splitting of water during photosynthesis.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Deficiency Symptoms of Essential elements<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When supply of essential elements becomes limited, plant growth is retarded. The concentration of essential elements below which plant growth is retarded is called <strong>critical concentration.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In absence of any particular element, plant shows certain morphological changes. These morphological changes are called <strong>deficiency symptoms<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The parts of plant that show deficiency symptoms depend upon <strong>mobility of elements<\/strong> in the plants. Elements that are actively mobilized (N,Mg,K) show deficiency in older regions. To identify the deficient elements various symptoms are compared with standard chart.<strong>Toxicity of micronutrients- <\/strong>in higher doses, micronutrients become toxic. Any tissue concentration which reduces dry weight of tissue by 10% is called toxic concentration. Critical toxic concentration is different for different elements.<strong>Mechanism of absorption of elements<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It takes place in two phases. In first phase, rapid intake of ions occurs in free space or outer space of the cells,<strong> apoplast<\/strong>. In second phase, ions are taken slowly into inner space, the <strong>symplast<\/strong> of the cells.<\/li>\n<li>Passive movement of ions in apoplast occurs through ion channels and trans-membrane protein. On the other hand, movement of ions into symplast occurs by expenditure of energy by active process.<\/li>\n<li>The movement of ion is called <strong>flux<\/strong>. The inward movement is called <strong>influx<\/strong> and outward movement is called <strong>efflux<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-mycbseguide.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/static\/revise\/11\/biology\/11_Bio_ch12_04.png\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Translocation of solutes<\/strong> occur through xylem along with ascending stream of water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Soil as reservoir of essential elements- <\/strong>most of the nutrients required for growth and development is obtained from soil by roots. These minerals are formed by weathering of rocks. Soil also harbours nitrogen fixing bacteria and other microbes, holds water and supplies air to roots. Deficiency of essential elements affects the crop yield. So, fertilisers are used to supplement these elements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Metabolism of Nitrogen<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nitrogen is the most prevalent element in living world along with C, H and O. It is the main constituent of proteins, nucleic acids, fats, hormones, enzymes etc.<\/li>\n<li>The process of conversion of nitrogen to ammonia is called <strong>nitrogen fixation<\/strong>. In nature lightening and ultraviolet radiation provide energy to convert atmospheric nitrogen into nitrogen oxide ( No, NO<sub>2<\/sub> and N<sub>2<\/sub>O).<\/li>\n<li>Industrial combustion, forest fire and automobiles along with thermal power plants produce nitrogen oxides.<\/li>\n<li>The decomposition of organic nitrogen of dead plants and animals into ammonia is called <strong>ammonification<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Ammonia is first oxidized to nitrite by bacteria <em>Nitrosomonas<\/em> or <em>Nitrococcus<\/em> which is further oxidized to nitrate with help of bacteria <em>Nitrobactor<\/em>. These processes are called <strong>nitrification.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"cke_widget_wrapper cke_widget_inline cke_widget_selected\"><span class=\"math-tex cke_widget_element\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/elpiscart.com\/cgi-bin\/mathtex.cgi?\\begin{gathered} 2H{N_3} + 3{O_2}\\xrightarrow{{}}2NO_2^ -+ 2{H^ + } + 2{H_2}O\\\\2NO_2^ -+ {O_2}\\xrightarrow{{}}2NO_3^ - \\end{gathered}\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nitrates formed is absorbed by plants and transported to leaves. Nitrates is converted into free nitrogen by the process called <strong>denitrificaion<\/strong> by bacteria <em>Pseudomonas <\/em>and <em>Thiobacillus<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Reduction of nitrogen to ammonia by living organism is called <strong>Biological Nitrogen Fixation<\/strong>. The enzyme<strong> nitrogenase<\/strong> is present in prokaryotic organism called nitrogen fixer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"cke_widget_wrapper cke_widget_inline cke_widget_selected\"><span class=\"math-tex cke_widget_element\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/elpiscart.com\/cgi-bin\/mathtex.cgi?N \\equiv N\\xrightarrow{{Nitrogenase}}N{H_3}\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nitrogen fixing microbes may be symbiotic (Rhizobium) or free living (Nostoc, Azotobactor, Anabaena).<\/li>\n<li>Symbiotic biological nitrogen fixation includes legume-bacteria relationship in which rod shaped Rhizobium lives with symbiotic relation with nodules of Leguminous plants.<\/li>\n<li>Central portion of nodule is pink or red due to presence of leguminous haemoglobin or leg-haemoglobin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Nodule formation <\/strong>involves sequence of interaction between root and Rhizobium as follows-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rhizobia increase in number and attach with epidermis of roots. Root hairs curls and bacteria invade it. An <strong>infection thread<\/strong> is formed that carries the bacteria into cortex of root.<\/li>\n<li>Nodule formation starts in cortex of root. Bacteria is released from thread to cells which leads to formation of specialized nitrogen fixing cells.<\/li>\n<li>Nodules establish <strong>direct vascular connection <\/strong>with host for exchange of nutrients.<\/li>\n<li>Nodule contains all necessary biochemical components like enzyme nitrogenase and leg-haemoglobin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-mycbseguide.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/static\/revise\/11\/biology\/11_Bio_ch12_05.png\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enzyme nitrogenase is a<strong> Mo-Fe protein<\/strong> and catalyses the conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The reaction is as follows-<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"cke_widget_wrapper cke_widget_inline cke_widget_selected\"><span class=\"math-tex cke_widget_element\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/elpiscart.com\/cgi-bin\/mathtex.cgi?{N_2} + 8{e^ - } + 8{H^ + } + 16ATP\" \/><\/span><\/span><span class=\"cke_widget_wrapper cke_widget_inline cke_widget_selected\"><span class=\"math-tex cke_widget_element\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/elpiscart.com\/cgi-bin\/mathtex.cgi?\\xrightarrow{{}}2N{H_3} + {H_2} + 16ADP + 16{P_1}\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The enzyme nitrogenase is highly sensitive to molecular oxygen and needs anaerobic condition. To protect this enzyme from oxygen, the nodules contain an oxygen scavenger called leg-haemoglobin.<\/li>\n<li>The ammonia synthesized by nitrogenase enzyme require large amount of energy (18ATP) for each NH3 produced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-mycbseguide.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/static\/revise\/11\/biology\/11_Bio_ch12_06.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fate of ammonia- <\/strong>at physiological pH, ammonia is converted into ammonium ions (NH<sub>4<\/sub><sup>+<\/sup>).It is toxic for plants in larger concentration and ammonium ion is converted into amino acids by two methods-<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Reductive amination<\/strong>&#8211; in this process ammonia reacts with \u03b1-ketoglutaric acid to form glutamic acid.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span class=\"cke_widget_wrapper cke_widget_inline cke_widget_selected\"><span class=\"math-tex cke_widget_element\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/elpiscart.com\/cgi-bin\/mathtex.cgi?\\alpha - ketoglutaric\\,\\,acid\\,\\, + NH_4^ + + NADPH\" \/><\/span><\/span><span class=\"cke_widget_wrapper cke_widget_inline cke_widget_selected\"><span class=\"math-tex cke_widget_element\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/elpiscart.com\/cgi-bin\/mathtex.cgi?\\xrightarrow [{Dehydrogenase}] {{Glutamate}}glutamate + {H_2}O + NADP\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Transamination<\/strong>&#8211; it involves the transfer of amino group from amino acids to keto group of keto acid. Glutamic acid is the main amino acid from which transfer of NH3 takes place and other amino acids are formed by transamination. The enzyme <strong>transaminase<\/strong> catalyses all such reactions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Two important amides asparagine and glutamine found in plants as structural part of proteins.
