It includes-<br \/>\n<strong>a) Periodic \u00a0abstinence<\/strong>&#8211; the couples avoid coitus from day 10 to 17 of menstrual cycle as chances of fertilisation are\u00a0very high during this period, it is called the fertile period.<br \/>\n<strong>b) Withdrawal or coitus interruptus\u00a0\u2013 <\/strong>male partner withdraws penis from vagina just before ejaculation to avoid insemination .<br \/>\n<strong>c) Lactational Amenorrhea \u2013<\/strong> absence of menstruation after parturition and due to intense milk feeding<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0no ovulation in this period , chances of fertilisation is nil.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In Barrier methods<\/strong>, ovum and sperms are prevented from physical meeting with help of barrier. This includes-<br \/>\n<strong>a)<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Condoms<\/strong>&#8211; used by male, barrier made of rubber or latex sheet used to cover penis or vagina and cervix of female. It also prevents from STDs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/media-mycbseguide.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/static\/revise\/12\/biology\/12_bio_ch04_01.jpg\" alt=\"Reproductive Health class 12 Notes Biology\" width=\"285\" height=\"106\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Condom for male \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/media-mycbseguide.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/static\/revise\/12\/biology\/12_bio_ch04_02.jpg\" alt=\"Reproductive Health class 12 Notes Biology\" width=\"263\" height=\"128\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>condom for female<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0b) Diaphragms, cervical cap and vaults<\/strong> are barrier made of rubber that is inserted into the female reproductive tract during coitus.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>.Spermicidal creams, jellies and foams are usually used alongwith these barriers to increase their contraceptive efficiency.<\/li>\n<li>Advantages of barrier methods:<br \/>\n1.\u00a0\u00a0They are disposable.<br \/>\n2.\u00a0\u00a0They can be self \u2013inserted.<br \/>\n3.\u00a0\u00a0They are reusable.<br \/>\n4.\u00a0\u00a0Prevents conception by blocking entry of sperm through\u00a0cervix.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Intra uterine Devices<\/strong>&#8211; inserted by doctor or trained nurse into the female uterus through vagina. IUCDs may be non-medicated IUDs (e.g., Lippes loop), copper releasing IUDs (CuT, Cu7, Multiload 375) and the hormone releasing IUDs (Progestasert, LNG-20)<\/li>\n<li>IUCDs increase the phagocytosis of sperm in uterus and copper reduce the motility and fertility capacity of sperms .The hormone releasing IUDs make the uterus unsuitable for implantation and the cervix hostile to the sperms. It is ideal for female who\u00a0wants to delay pregnancy and spacing between two children.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oral Pills<\/strong> are progesterone or progesterone-estrogen combination used by females in form of tablets. They inhibit ovulation and implantation as well as change the quality of cervical mucus to prevent\/ retard entry of sperms.Administration of progesterone or progesterone-estrogen combination within 72 hours of coitus is found to be very effective as emergency contraceptive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Surgical method <\/strong>&#8211; This method is also called\u00a0<strong>sterilisation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is used as terminal method of contraception in male and female to prevent any more pregnancy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/media-mycbseguide.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/static\/revise\/12\/biology\/12_bio_ch04_03.jpg\" alt=\"Reproductive Health class 12 Notes Biology\" width=\"208\" height=\"187\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Vasectomy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/media-mycbseguide.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/static\/revise\/12\/biology\/12_bio_ch04_04.jpg\" alt=\"Reproductive Health class 12 Notes Biology\" width=\"236\" height=\"227\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"_Tubectomy\"><\/span><strong>\u00a0Tubectomy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Vasectomy <\/strong>is the surgical method in male; a small part of the vas deferens is removed or tied up through a small incision on the scrotum\u00a0to prevent release of sperms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tubectomy\u00a0<\/strong>is the surgical method in females in which small part of fallopian tube is removed surgically.<\/li>\n<li>These techniques are highly effective but their reversibility is very poor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Side_effects_of_contraceptive_method\"><\/span><strong>Side effects of contraceptive method:<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0It is very important that the selection of contraceptive method should be taken under the consultation of the doctors.<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00a0They have ill-effects like nausea, abdominal pain, breakthrough bleeding, irregular menstrual bleeding or even breast cancer.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Medical_Termination_of_Pregnancy\"><\/span><strong>Medical Termination of Pregnancy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Voluntary termination of pregnancy before full term is called MTP (medical termination of pregnancy) or induced abortion. It plays important role in decreasing population by aborting unwanted pregnancy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In India, MTP is legalized in 1971 with some restriction to prevent its misuse such as indiscriminate and illegal female foeticides.<\/li>\n<li>MTP is used to<\/li>\n<li>Get rides of unwanted pregnancy due to unprotected intercourse or failure of contraceptives used during coitus or rapes.<\/li>\n<li>When pregnancy continuation could be harmful or even fetal to mother or foetus.<\/li>\n<li>MTPs are considered relatively safe during first trimester or up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. Second trimester MTPs are much more riskier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sexually_Transmitted_Disease_STDs\"><\/span><strong>Sexually Transmitted Disease (STDs)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Diseases or infections which are transmitted through sexual intercourse are collectively called sexually transmitted disease or venereal disease (VD) or reproductive tract infection (RTI).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some common STDs are Gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes, chlamydiasis, genital warts, trichomoniasis, hepatitis-Ba and AIDS.<\/li>\n<li>Hepatitis-B and HIV is also transmitted by sharing of injection needles, surgical instruments with infected person, transfusion of blood, or from infected mother to foetus.<\/li>\n<li>Except genital herpes, HIV and hepatitis-B are completely curable if detected earlier and treated properly.<\/li>\n<li>Timely detection and proper treatment of STDs are very important otherwise it could lead to complications later, which include pelvic inflammatory diseases (PID), abortions, still births, ectopic pregnancies, infertility or even cancer of the reproductive tract.<\/li>\n<li>Infections of STDs can be prevented by-<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>a) Avoid sex with unknown partners\/multiple partners.<\/p>\n<p>b) Always use condoms during coitus.<\/p>\n<p>c) Go to a qualified doctor in case of doubt for early detection and get complete treatment if diagnosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Infertility <\/strong>: The couples which are unable to reproduce children inspite of unprotected sexual cohabitation are called infertile.The reasons for this could be many-physical, congenital, diseases, drugs, Immunological or even Psychological.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Infertile couples can be assisted to have children through certain special techniques commonly called <strong>assisted reproductive technologies (ART) <\/strong>,which includes-<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>In vitro fertilisation (IVF)<\/strong>-fertilisation outside the body followed by embryo transfer, which is commonly called test tube baby program. The ovum from wife\/donor and sperms from husband\/ donor are collected and induced to fertilize in laboratory conditions. The zygote or early embryo (8 blastomeres) could be transferred into fallopian tube called <strong>ZIFT <\/strong>(zygote infra fallopian transfer) and embryo with more than 8 blastomeres <strong>IUT<\/strong> (intra uterine transfer) into the uterus to complete the further development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GIFT (gamete intra fallopian transfer) \u2013<\/strong>transfer of gametes collected from a donor into fallopian tube of another female who do not produce ovum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)-<\/strong>specialized procedure to form an embryo in laboratory in which sperm is directly injected into ovum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Artificial insemination- <\/strong>infertility cases in which male partner is unable to produce healthy sperms are treated by this technique in which semen collected from donor is artificially introduced into vagina or into uterus, <strong>IUI ( intra uterine insemination)<\/strong> of the female.<\/p>\n<p>All these techniques require extremely high precision handling by specialized professional and expensive instruments. .
