Innermost layer <strong>tapetum<\/strong> nourishes the developing pollen grains.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Sporogenous tissues-<\/strong> It is compactly arranged homogenous cells which are present at centre of each microsporangium when the anther is young..<\/p>\n<p><strong>Microsporogenesis- <\/strong>The process of the formation and differentiation of microspores (pollen grains) from microspore mother cells (MMC) by reductional division is called microsporogenesis.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The cells of sporogenous tissues undergo meiotic division to form microspore tetrad. Pollen grains are made of 2 layered Wall,<\/p>\n<p>1. Exine :- Made of sporopollenin- most resistant organic matter known.It can withstand high temperatures and strong acids and alkali. No enzyme can degrade sporopollenin<\/p>\n<p>2. Intine :-<br \/>\n-Thin and continuous layer<br \/>\n&#8211; Made of cellulose and pectin<\/p>\n<p>3. Germ pores<br \/>\n&#8211; apertures on exine where sporopollenin is absent<br \/>\n&#8211; forms pollen tube.<\/p>\n<p>4. Pollen grains of large number of species are stored in liquid nitrogen at temperature \u2013 196<sup>0<\/sup>, called pollen bank.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Pistil, Megasporangium (Ovule) and Embryo sac <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Gynoecium may consists of single pistil (monocarpellary) or more than one pistil (polycarpellary) which may be fused (syncarpous) or free (apocarpous).<\/p>\n<p>e.g Multicarpellary and syncarpous pistil- Papaver<\/p>\n<p>Multicarpellary and apocarpous pistil- Michelia<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Each pistil has three parts the <strong>stigma, style and ovary<\/strong>. Inside the ovary is ovarian cavity (locule). The placenta is located inside the ovarian cavity. Megasporangia (ovules) arise from placenta.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Megasporangium<\/strong> (ovule)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ovule is a small structure attached to placenta.<\/li>\n<li>Funicle \u2013 stalk by which ovule is attached to placenta<\/li>\n<li>Hilum- junction between ovule and funicle<\/li>\n<li>Integuments- protective envelops<\/li>\n<li>Micropyle- small opening at the tip of ovule into where pollen tube enters<\/li>\n<li>Chalaza- basal part of ovule<\/li>\n<li>Nucellus (2n)-mass of cells enclosed in integuments. This process takes place in ovule<\/p>\n<p>Ovule differentiates a single megaspore mother cell (MMC) in the micropylar region of nucellus. MMC undergoes meiotic division that results into the production of four megaspores.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 In most of the flowering plants three megaspores degenerate. 1megaspore develops into female gametophyte (embryo sac).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The nucleus of functional megaspore divides mitotically to form two nuclei which move to opposite poles to form 2-nucleate embryo sac. Two more sequential mitotic division results into 8-nucleate embryo sac.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Six of the eight nuclei surrounded by cell wall and remaining two nuclei (polar nuclei) are situated below the egg apparatus.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Three cells are grouped at micropylar end to constitute <strong>egg apparatus<\/strong> and three cells at chalazal end forms <strong>antipodal cells.<\/strong> At maturity ,embryosac is <strong>8-nucleate and 7 celled.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/media-mycbseguide.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/static\/revise\/12\/biology\/12_bio_ch02_07.jpg\" alt=\"Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants Class 12 Notes Biology\" width=\"455\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pollination<\/strong> \u2013 transfer of pollen grains from anther to stigma.<\/p>\n<p>a) <strong>Autogamy<\/strong>&#8211; transfer of pollen grain from anther to stigma of same flower.<\/p>\n<p>i. <strong>Cleistogamous <\/strong>\u2013 flower which do not open. cleistogamous flowers are autogamous as there is no chance of cross-pollen landing on the stigma. Cleistogamous flowers produce assured seed-set even in the absence of pollinators. e.g Viola (common pansy), Oxalis, and Commelina.<\/p>\n<p>ii. <strong>Chasmogamous<\/strong>&#8211; exposed anther and stigma.<\/p>\n<p>b) <strong>Geitonogamy<\/strong> \u2013 transfer of pollen grains from anther to stigma of different flower of same plant. Geitonogamy is functionally cross-pollination involving a pollinating agent, genetically it is similar to autogamy since the pollen grains come from the same plant<\/p>\n<p>c) <strong>Xenogamy<\/strong>&#8211; transfer of pollen grain from anther to stigma of different plant\u2019s flower of same species.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Agents of pollination<\/strong> includes abiotic (water, wind) and biotic (insects, butterfly, honey bee etc. large number of pollen grains are produced by plants using abiotic mode of pollination as most of pollen grains are wasted during transfer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adaptations in flowers for Pollination<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I. Wind Pollination<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>pollen grains :\u2013 light, non- sticky, winged<\/li>\n<li>anther :- well exposed<\/li>\n<li>stigma :- large and feathery<\/li>\n<li>flower :- one ovule, arranged as inflorescence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ex <strong>: <\/strong>corn cob<strong>, <\/strong>cotton, date palm<\/p>\n<p>II. <strong>Water Pollination<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em>&#8211; Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Algae<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>pollen grains : protected by mucilaginous covering<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ex : Fresh water plants- Vallisneria, Hydrilla<br \/>\nSea grass- Zostera<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main features of wind and water pollinated plants<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; produce pollen grains in large no.<br \/>\n&#8211; do not produce nectar<\/p>\n<p>III. <strong>Insect Pollination<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; <\/strong>Flowers : large, colourful, fragrant, rich in nectar<br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; <\/strong>Pollen grains : sticky<br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; <\/strong>Stigma : sticky<\/p>\n<p><strong>Certain rewards to pollinators<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>nectar and (edible) pollen grains as foods<\/li>\n<li>provide safe place for laying eggs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Ex :<\/strong> Amorphophallus, Yucca<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/media-mycbseguide.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/static\/revise\/12\/biology\/12_bio_ch02_08.jpg\" alt=\"Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants Class 12 Notes Biology\" width=\"193\" height=\"268\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Outbreeding Devices<\/strong>&#8211; the various mechanisms take discourage self-pollination and encourage cross pollination as continued self-pollination leads to inbreeding depression. It includes<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Pollen release and stigma receptivity not synchronized.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Anther and stigma are placed at different position.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Inhibiting pollen germination in pistil.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Production of unisexual flowers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pollen pistil interaction \u2013 <\/strong>the pistil has ability to recognize the compatible pollen to initiate post pollination events that leads to fertilisation. Pollen grain produce pollen tube through germ pores to facilitate transfer of male gametes to embryo sac.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Artificial Hybridization<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Crossing diff varieties of species- hybrid individual- with desirable characters of the parent plants<\/li>\n<li>desired pollen grains for pollination- stigma protected from contamination<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emasculation : <\/strong>removal of anther<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bagging : <\/strong>flower covered- bag made up of butter-prevent contamination of stigma from unwanted pollen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bagged flower- attains receptivity- mature pollen grains- dusted on the stigma \u2013 rebagged- fruits allowed to develop<\/p>\n<p><strong>Double Fertilisation- <\/strong>after entering the one of the synergids, each pollen grain releases two male gametes. One male gametes fuse with egg (<strong>Syngamy<\/strong>) and other male gametes fuse with two polar nuclei (<strong>triple fusion<\/strong>) to produce triploid <strong>primary endosperm nucleus (PEN)<\/strong>. Since two types of fusion takes place in an embryo sac the phenomenon is called<strong> double fertilisation.<\/strong> The PEN develops into the endosperm and zygote develops into embryo.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/media-mycbseguide.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/static\/revise\/12\/biology\/12_bio_ch02_09.jpg\" alt=\"Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants Class 12 Notes Biology\" width=\"451\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Post fertilisation events<\/strong> include endosperm and embryo development, maturation of ovules into seeds and ovary into fruits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Endosperm<\/strong>&#8211; the primary endosperm cell divides many time to forms triploid endosperm tissue having reserve food materials.<\/p>\n<p>Two types of endosperm development :<br \/>\n(i) Free nuclear type (common method)<br \/>\n(ii) Cellular type<\/p>\n<p>(a) Non-albuminous- endosperm completely utilized- before maturation of seeds. e.g pea, groundnut<\/p>\n<p>(b) Albuminous- a portion of endosperm remain in mature seeds. e.g wheat, maize, castor<\/p>\n<p><strong>Embryo- <\/strong>Embryo develops at the micropylar end of the embryo sac where the zygote is located.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Embryogeny <\/strong>\u2013 early stages of embryo development.The zygote gives rise to the proembryo and subsequently to the globular, heart-shaped and mature embryo.<\/p>\n<p>Embryo consists of:<br \/>\n&#8211; embryonal axis<br \/>\n&#8211; cotyledons<br \/>\n&#8211; plumule<br \/>\n&#8211; radicle<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monocotyledonous Seed<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Scutellem = Cotyledon<br \/>\n&#8211; Coleorrhiza: undifferentiated sheath covering radical &amp; root cap<br \/>\n&#8211; Coleoptile: sheath covering plumule<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seed<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Fertilized and mature ovule develops into seed.<\/p>\n<p>Seed consists of:<br \/>\n&#8211; cotyledon(s)<br \/>\n&#8211; embryonal axis<br \/>\n&#8211; Seed coat- double layered- formed by integuments<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Testa <\/strong>(outer coat)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tegmen <\/strong>(inner coat)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8211; <strong><em>Micropyle<\/em><\/strong>:- small opening on seed coat, it facilitates entry of H2O &amp; O2 into seeds (for germination)<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong><em>Hilum<\/em><\/strong>:- scar on seed coat<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong><em>Seed <\/em><\/strong>&#8211; Albuminous \/ Non-Albuminous<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong><em>Perisperm<\/em><\/strong> : remnants of nucellus that is persistent. Ex: Black pepper<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong><em>Dormancy<\/em><\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> state of inactivity<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The wall of ovary develops into wall of fruit called<strong> pericarp.<\/strong> In true fruits only ovary contributes in fruit formation by in false fruit thalamus also contributes in fruit formation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apomixis<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Form of asexual reproduction- mimics sexual reproduction- seed formed without fertilisation<br \/>\n&#8211; Formation of apomictic seeds :<br \/>\n\u2022 diploid cell (formed without meiosis)- develop into embryo without fertilization<br \/>\n\u2022 cells of nucellus (2n) surrounding embryo sac- protrude into embryo sac- develop into embryos.
