Bengal weavers were the worst hit.\u00a0The English and European companies stopped buying Indian textiles, and their agents no longer gave out advances to weavers to secure supplies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Capture of the Indian market <\/strong>&#8211; British cotton cloth flooded Indian markets by the 1830s. Now it became difficult for the iron smelters to find wood for charcoal. Getting iron ore was also a big problem. Hence, many gave up their craft and looked for other jobs.<\/li>\n<li>In some areas, the government did grant access to the forest. But the iron smelters had to pay a very high tax to the forest department for every furnace they used. This reduced their income and discouraged them from the development of their business.<\/li>\n<li>The late 19<sup>th<\/sup>century iron and steel were being imported from Britain. Ironsmiths in India began using the imported iron to manufacture utensils and implements. This inevitably lowered the demand for iron produced by local smelters.<\/li>\n<li>In the late nineteenth century, a series of famines devastated the dry tracts of India. As a result, many of the local smelters, for example, the Agarias stopped work, deserted their villages, and migrated, looking for some other work to survive the hard times.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>By the early twentieth century, the artisans producing iron and steel faced new competition from iron and steel factories.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Q10_What_problems_did_the_Indian_textile_industry_face_in_the_early_years_of_its_development\"><\/span><strong>Q10. English and European companies stopped buying Indian goods and their agents no longer gave out advances to weavers to secure supplies. Distressed weavers wrote petitions to the government to help them.<\/li>\n<li>By the 1880s, two-thirds of all the cotton clothes worn by Indians were made of cloth produced in Britain.
