It is made up of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% of other gases. The 1% includes argon, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and trace amounts of other gases.

Q.2: How do the different layers of the atmosphere affect the planet Earth?

Solution: The Earth’s atmosphere has five layers. Each layer protects the planet and makes life possible:

Troposphere (0 to 12 km): This layer touches the ground. It holds the air we breathe and all weather occurs here. It traps heat to keep the Earth warm.

Stratosphere (12 to 50 km): This holds the ozone layer. Think of ozone as a giant shield. It stops harmful sun rays from burning plants and animals.

Mesosphere (50 to 85 km): This is a very cold layer. It acts as a shield against space rocks. Space rocks (meteors) burn up here before they hit the ground.

Thermosphere (85 to 700 km): This layer blocks harmful radiation from space. It also helps bounce radio waves across the globe.

Exosphere (700 to 10,000 km): This is where space begins. It holds many weather and communication satellites.

Q.3: What is the mechanism of monsoon?

Solution: Monsoons are giant seasonal wind patterns that change direction based on the seasons. The primary mechanism relies on differential heating (land heating up and cooling down much faster than the ocean). This creates massive pressure differences, driving wet ocean winds onto the land.

Q.4: How can we reduce our carbon footprint?

Solution: You can shrink your carbon footprint by taking public transit, walking, or using an electric vehicle (EV). You should also eat more plant-based meals and avoid wasting food. At home, save energy by using LED lights, turning off unused electronics, and buying second-hand items.

Q.5: What is atmosphere? Explain its composition with the help of a pie diagram.

Solution: The atmosphere is a thick blanket of gases that surrounds the Earth. It is held in place by gravity. It protects life from harmful sun rays, keeps the planet warm, and provides the air we breathe.

Composition of the Atmosphere

The atmosphere is mostly made of just two gases: Nitrogen and Oxygen. Together, they make up about (99%) of the air. The rest is a mix of other gases like Argon and Carbon Dioxide.

Here is the breakdown of these gases:

Nitrogen (78%): Acts as a buffer. It dilutes pure oxygen to stop fires from burning too fast. Plants need it to grow.

Oxygen (21%): The gas humans and animals need to breathe.

Argon (0.93%): An inert gas (meaning it is very stable and does not react easily with other things).

Carbon Dioxide (0.04%): A greenhouse gas that traps Earth’s heat. Plants use it to make food.

Trace Gases (0.03%): Includes very small amounts of water vapor, ozone, helium, neon, and methane.

Q.6: Draw a labelled diagram of the structure of atmosphere.

Solution:

Q.7: Which are the four main seasons of India?

Solution: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) officially recognizes four main seasons in the country: Winter, Summer, Monsoon, and Post-Monsoon.

Q.8: Why do you not feel the pressure of the atmosphere?

Solution: You do not feel atmospheric pressure because the fluids and gases inside your body push outward with the exact same force as the air pressing down on you. These balanced forces cancel each other out, so your body feels nothing.

Q.9: In which layer of the atmosphere do aeroplanes fly and why?

Solution: Aeroplanes generally fly in the lower part of the stratosphere because this layer has stable air conditions, fewer clouds, and less turbulence, which makes flying smoother and safer. The stratosphere also contains the ozone layer, which protects the Earth from harmful ultraviolet rays.

Q.10: Distinguish between the troposphere and the stratosphere.

Solution:

Troposphere

Stratosphere

It is the lowest layer of the atmosphere.

It lies above the troposphere.

Weather phenomena such as clouds, rain, and storms occur here.

Weather is generally calm and stable.

Temperature decreases with increase in altitude.

Temperature increases with increase in altitude.

It contains most of the air and water vapour.

It contains the ozone layer and very little water vapour.

Q.11: Distinguish between the southwest monsoon and the northeast monsoon.

Solution:

South-West Monsoon

North-East Monsoon

It blows from the south-west towards India.

It blows from the north-east towards the sea.

It occurs from June to September.

It occurs from October to December.

It brings heavy rainfall to most parts of India.

It brings little rainfall to most parts, but heavy rain to the Tamil Nadu coast.

It is known as the summer monsoon.

It is known as the retreating or winter monsoon.

Q.12: Collect pictures of houses and clothing of people from different regions of India. Examine whether they reflect any relationship with the climatic conditions or the relief of those regions.

Solution: Traditional housing and clothing across India perfectly adapt to local geography and climate. In the arid, sun-scorched deserts of Rajasthan, houses have thick mud walls and flat roofs to block the heat, while people wear loose, layered cotton and large pagdis (turbans) to shield themselves from sandstorms and intense sun.

Atmosphere and Climate – NCERT Solutions Class 9 Social Science (New) Understanding Society includes all the questions with solutions given in the NCERT Class 9 Social Science Book Understanding Society textbook.
