You are aware that Central Board of Secondary Education has been conducting Group Mathematics Olympiad every year. The competition\u00a0 is held at\u00a0 selected venues\u00a0 in different parts of the country and aims at identifying, promoting and nurturing talent in the subject. This is to inform you that this year’s said competition will be held on Sunday, 29th November 2009\u00a0 at\u00a0 identified\u00a0 centres.<\/p>\n
BACKGROUND INFORMATION<\/p>\n
Mathematical Olympiads are\u00a0 the\u00a0 competitions\u00a0 conducted by different organizations\u00a0 to identify, encourage, promote and nurture\u00a0 the\u00a0 talent\u00a0 in Mathematics at State, Regional, National and\u00a0 International\u00a0 levels.<\/p>\n
After having been accorded\u00a0 the status of an\u00a0 independent group by National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) in 1997, Central Board of Secondary Education, Delhi has been conducting CBSE Group Mathematical Olympiad\u00a0 for students studying\u00a0 in\u00a0 its affiliated schools.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0 said\u00a0 competition will\u00a0 be\u00a0 conducted on\u00a0 fourth Sunday of November\u00a0 at\u00a0 different centres\u00a0 located\u00a0 in different parts of\u00a0 the country. Top 30 students\u00a0 from CBSE group will\u00a0 then participate\u00a0 in\u00a0 Indian\u00a0 National Mathematical\u00a0 Olympiad\u00a0 (INMO)\u00a0 conducted\u00a0 by\u00a0 National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM). Selection at National level leads to participation at the\u00a0 international Mathematical Olympiad<\/p>\n
OBJECTIVES OF MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD<\/p>\n
The role of Mathematics cannot be denied\u00a0 in\u00a0 the age of rapid\u00a0 technological advancements and\u00a0 innovations. The broad objectives of conducting mathematical Olympiad\u00a0 include:
\nIdentifying\u00a0 talent\u00a0 in Mathematics
\nProviding opportunities to young and talented students to solve challenging problems in Mathematics.
\nPromoting excellence\u00a0 in Mathematics
\nEncouraging\u00a0 talented students\u00a0 to pursue carriers\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 fields\u00a0 related\u00a0 to Mathematics.<\/p>\n
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN CBSE GROUP MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD?<\/p>\n
a) Any\u00a0 student\u00a0 studying\u00a0 in\u00a0 class XII, XI, X\u00a0 or\u00a0 IX\u00a0 can\u00a0 participate\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 competition. However,\u00a0 there will be a common question paper\u00a0 for all participants.
\nb) A school can sponsor upto 5 students\u00a0 for\u00a0 the competition.
\nc) The\u00a0 five students should be selected strictly on\u00a0 the basis of a screening\u00a0 test conducted by\u00a0 the school\u00a0 itself.<\/p>\n
FEE TO BE PAID<\/p>\n
Every sponsored candidate shall remit a sum of Rs.35\/- as entry fee for the examination. The\u00a0 fee of\u00a0 the candidates should be\u00a0 forwarded by\u00a0 the Principal of sponsoring school\u00a0 to\u00a0 the state coordinator in the form of demand draft in favour of the Principal of the venue school. The\u00a0 list of state coordinators appears at\u00a0 the end of\u00a0 this\u00a0 folder.<\/p>\n
DATE OF EXAMINATION<\/p>\n
a) Thirteenth CBSE group Mathematical Olympiad 2009 will be held on Sunday, 29th November 2009 at\u00a0 the centres notified at\u00a0 the end of\u00a0 this\u00a0 folder.
\nb) The examination will commence at 1.00 p.m. 4.00 p.m.
\nc) The duration of\u00a0 the examination will be 3 hours.<\/p>\n
LAST DATE FOR APPLYING<\/p>\n
The fee along with the desired information about the sponsored students should reach the State Coordinator by 21\u00a0 October, 2009.\u00a0 In no case should\u00a0 the\u00a0 fee or documents be sent\u00a0 to the Board.<\/p>\n
HOW TO APPLY?<\/p>\n
a) The Head of\u00a0 Institution will\u00a0 forward\u00a0 the names of sponsored students\u00a0 to\u00a0 the state coordinator nominated by\u00a0 the Board.
\nb) The information about the sponsored candidates including name, father\u2019s name, date of birth, school address, class, residential address, total marks obtained in the class one lower than in which he\/she is studying, should be sent to the state coordinator along with\u00a0 the\u00a0 fee before\u00a0 the\u00a0 last date.
\nc) The sponsored candidates should be bonafide students of\u00a0 the\u00a0 institution.
\nd) The\u00a0 admit\u00a0 card\u00a0 to\u00a0 be\u00a0 issued\u00a0 by\u00a0 the\u00a0 sponsoring\u00a0 school\u00a0 should\u00a0 have\u00a0 complete information about\u00a0 the students.
\ne) The\u00a0 admit\u00a0 card\u00a0 should\u00a0 also\u00a0 carry\u00a0 the\u00a0 signature\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 student\u00a0 and\u00a0 his\/her\u00a0 latest photograph duly attested by\u00a0 the Principal.<\/p>\n
VENUE FOR THE EXAMINATION<\/p>\n
a) The Group Mathematical Olympiad will be held at one or two venues in each state as listed\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 folder.
\nb) Every candidate is required to appear at the venue in his\/her state only. No change of venue\u00a0 for\u00a0 the examination will be admissible.
\nc) Every\u00a0 candidate\u00a0 has\u00a0 to\u00a0 bear\u00a0 the\u00a0 expenditure\u00a0 for\u00a0 his\/her\u00a0 transport,\u00a0 boarding\u00a0 and lodging etc.
\nd) In\u00a0 case\u00a0 of\u00a0 candidates\u00a0 studying\u00a0 in\u00a0 Gulf\u00a0 schools,\u00a0 the\u00a0 schools\u00a0 will\u00a0 have\u00a0 to\u00a0 make arrangement\u00a0 for candidate\u00a0 to appear at\u00a0 the\u00a0 identified centre.
\ne) The state coordinator will inform all the participating schools about the roll nos. of the candidates, exact\u00a0 venue, date of examination,\u00a0 time of examination and\u00a0 the other details.<\/p>\n
MEDIUM OF EXAMINATION<\/p>\n
The question paper will be made available\u00a0 in English Medium. The candidates are\u00a0 required to answer\u00a0 in\u00a0 the English medium.<\/p>\n
SYLLABUS AND PATTERN OF EXAMINATION<\/p>\n
There is no specific syllabus for the examination. Areas of school Mathematics such as algebra, geometry, basic number\u00a0 theory,\u00a0 trigonometry, arithmetic, combinatorics etc. are\u00a0 to be prepared for the test. The question paper will consist of 6-7 questions of non-routine
\nnature.<\/p>\n
CONDUCT OF GMO<\/p>\n
1) The Coordinator will act as the Centre Supdt. for the examination at his\/her centre. He\/she will appoint\u00a0 invigilator as per CBSE examination norms.
\n2) In\u00a0 addition\u00a0 to\u00a0 invigilators,\u00a0 the\u00a0 Centre\u00a0 Supdt. may\u00a0 appoint\u00a0 one\u00a0 clerk\/peon\u00a0 for\u00a0 the conduct of\u00a0 the examination.<\/p>\n
QUESTION PAPERS<\/p>\n
a) The question papers will be sent by CBSE\u00a0 to\u00a0 the State\/Regional Coordinator directly in advance.
\nb) The\u00a0 coordinator\u00a0 shall\u00a0 keep\u00a0 the\u00a0 sealed\u00a0 papers\u00a0 in\u00a0 his\/her\u00a0 safe\u00a0 custody\u00a0 till\u00a0 the commencement\u00a0 of\u00a0 examination.\u00a0 The\u00a0 sealed\u00a0 packets\u00a0 containing\u00a0 the\u00a0 question papers should be opened only half an hour before\u00a0 the start of examination.<\/p>\n
MERIT LIST<\/p>\n
The answer sheets of candidates who appear in CBSE GMO will be evaluated at the centre decided by the Board. CBSE will select 30 candidates strictly in order of merit. Only\u00a0 the selected candidates will be\u00a0 informed about\u00a0 the result and will be eligible\u00a0 to appear\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 Indian National Mathematical Olympiad conducted by NBHM.
