CBSE formulated the ASL test in the year 2012 in all its affiliated schools in order to emphasize the importance of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Learning skills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking skills<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBSE designed the test to enhance the communication skills of learners. The board emphasized the fact that good communication skills were essential as they:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boost the confidence of students<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uplift their scale of employment<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The listening and speaking skills have different motives in the ASL test. We shall discuss these skills in depth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Listening_Skills\"><\/span><b>Listening Skills<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It evaluates the student\u2019s ability to comprehend basic instructions or the academic materials. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The focus is to use the assessment of Listening Skills for improving learners\u2019 competency to listen for basic interpersonal, instructional and academic purposes. A number of sub-skills need to be developed in the everyday classroom transaction. Given below are some of the <\/span><b>sub-skills of listening to<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that need to be assessed for the Internal Assessment component of Listening:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Listening for Specific Information<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Listening for General Understanding<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Predictive Listening<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Inferential Listening<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Listening for Pleasure<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Intensive Listening<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evaluative Listening<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, the assessment items being prepared by subject teachers must assess the above. The basic purpose was to assess the listening and interpretation skills of the grade 10 students. The learners are expected to decipher and interpret the meaning conveyed in the audio. The examiner judges the listening abilities of the student on the basis of his comprehension and views that he presents before the examiner.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Speaking_Skills\"><\/span><b>Speaking Skills<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, the grade 10 student is evaluated on the basis of his speaking ability. The examiner tests the student\u2019s ability to express himself on a given topic in English. The student is judged on the following parameters:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vocabulary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the set of words that the student implements while expressing his views on a particular topic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sentence construction:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this refers to the correct way of using the language system\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Expression<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the student is also judged on his creative as well as analytical skills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fluency:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the ability to speak quickly and without errors is termed fluency<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pronunciation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stress is laid on the perfect manner of communication, this includes the articulation, stress and intonation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Precision:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here, we check for grammatical errors, pronunciation, articulation etc. on the whole\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Interaction;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this refers to the ability of the student to respond to others while speaking on a particular topic\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assessment of speaking skills is of paramount importance and is, therefore, a major component of the overall learning assessment. ALS must be seen as an integral component of all 4 language skills. Reading and writing are well assessed during the written exam, so listening and speaking skills are emphasized while conducting ASL tests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>There are five types of activities to assess speaking skills:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intensive Speaking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responsive Speaking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interactive Speaking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extensive Speaking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imitative Speaking<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now we shall explore a little bit about each one of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Intensive_Speaking\"><\/span><b>Intensive Speaking<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following activities can be performed to judge the intensive speaking skills:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b> A read-it-out Task:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The teacher listens to a recording and evaluates the students on the basis of some given parameters like fluency, expression etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Some variations of this task are:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reading a script with someone else<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reading the information in tabular format<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Sentence\/ dialogue completion task:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Students read through the dialogue so they can think about appropriate words to fill in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Picture-cued Tasks:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The picture-cued requires the test taker to provide a description of the given image.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Responsive_speaking\"><\/span><b>Responsive speaking<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following tasks can be performed to assess the student\u2019s ability to respond:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Question and Answer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giving instructions and directions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paraphrasing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Interactive_Speaking\"><\/span><b>Interactive Speaking<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are some of the most common interactive speaking tasks<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interview: It is a one-to-one interaction between the examiner and the student.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Role play is another scholastic activity that is used in communicative English classes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussions and Conversations: These two speaking tasks provide a level of credibility and flow that other assessment techniques may not provide<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Games are an informal assessment task but they are not commonly used<\/span><b>.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Extensive_Speaking\"><\/span><b>Extensive Speaking<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are some of the most common extensive speaking tasks that you can use to assess speaking.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral Presentations are implemented for evaluating extensive speaking, these are evaluated on the basis of content and delivery.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Picture-cued storytelling: Students describe a story based on a set of pictures that they have already seen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Re-Telling a story, News Event: Students are asked to tell a story of something they heard or read.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Imitative_speaking\"><\/span><b>Imitative speaking<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imitative speaking tasks are based on repetition. You just need to repeat a sentence you hear. Examples include directed response tasks, reading aloud, sentence and dialogue completion, and limited picture-cued tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ALS must be seen as an integrated component of all four language skills rather than a compartment of two. Suggested activities, therefore, take into consideration an integration of the four language skills but during the assessment, emphasis will be given to speaking and listening, since reading and writing are already being assessed in the written exam.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Guidelines_for_Assessment_in_Listening_and_Speaking_Skills\"><\/span><b>Guidelines for Assessment in Listening and Speaking Skills<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Grade_10_English_CBSE\"><\/span><b>Grade 10 English CBSE<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of Subject Enrichment Activities for Internal assessment, the Assessment of<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listening and Speaking Skills will be for 10 marks. It is recommended that listening and speaking skills should be regularly practiced. Art-integrated projects based on activities like Role Play, Skit, Dramatization etc. must be used. Hence, testing of oral skills must be made an important component of the overall testing pattern.
