{"id":1427,"date":"2011-02-01T11:34:11","date_gmt":"2011-02-01T11:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mycbseguide.com\/blog\/?p=1427"},"modified":"2011-02-01T11:37:59","modified_gmt":"2011-02-01T11:37:59","slug":"dealing-with-results-%e2%80%93-a-few-useful-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mycbseguide.com\/blog\/dealing-with-results-%e2%80%93-a-few-useful-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Dealing with results \u2013 A few useful tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\tIt is important for the counselor to help children cope up with the disappointment, if at all, related to examination results.&nbsp; Broadly speaking examination results should be treated as a spring board to future achievements and better prospects.&nbsp; Examination results can cause a great deal of anxiety to the students and parents alike.&nbsp; However, a consistent family support system&nbsp;&nbsp; can be of help.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<u>Parents should look out for the following signs:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tPhysical symptoms, such as sleeping or eating more or less than usual<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tMental symptoms, such as loss of concentration and interest<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tEmotional symptoms such as tears, tantrums, panic attacks<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAddictive symptoms, such as excessive drinking or smoking or using pills<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tSelf depreciating comments &ldquo;I knew I&rsquo;ll never pass or never do well or&hellip;Mohit&rsquo;s much brighter than me&hellip;&hellip;&hellip;&rdquo;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<u>Must Dos for parents:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tDo not nag the child. Be supportive and encouraging.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tHelp the child to develop self-discipline, self-direction, self-confidence and a sense of achievement.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tJust good schooling and tuition are not substitutes for emotional cushioning.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tHelp the child in maintaining his confidence especially when he seems discouraged by his dropping marks or grades.&nbsp; Do not displace your anxiety on the child.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tThe achievement goals should be realistically set according to the child&rsquo;s capability.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tPraise the child when he does well.&nbsp; Encourage the child&rsquo;s performance with positive statements like, &ldquo;well done&rdquo;, &ldquo;you can do better&rdquo;, rather than saying &ldquo;that was not enough&rdquo;.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tDo not harp on previous failures or results.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t&nbsp;If achievement expectations are too high it may lead to greater anxiety.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tHumor relieves tension.&nbsp; Be light and humorous with the child.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTry to gain your child&rsquo;s confidence and discuss problems.&nbsp; Help to find a solution.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tExams are not the end of the world.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAccept that expectation for every one to do well is unrealistic.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tInvolve the child in decision making.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tBe aware of the market demands and do not concentrate on traditional courses alone.&nbsp; This will narrow down the options considerably and cause stress.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tMany students do better after school because of maturity and greater focus, course of interest, rise and awareness level and exposure to options.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAvoid criticizing or comparing the child with others.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tMake the child feel important and loved.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tListen to your child.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTake help of a professional counselor in case of a conflict or depression over the result.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<u>The students should:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tAssess priorities, assets and difficulties<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tFollow a normalized routine atmosphere at home.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tImagining extreme consequences and worst situations is of no use and needs to be discouraged.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tIt is helpful to know what she\/ he can accomplish.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tDo not magnify failure and try to talk them out of it.&nbsp; Should not demean themselves.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tContact the teachers or counselors if they feel low or anxious or disinterested.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tDevelop alternative coping strategies and de -focus from the pain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<u>Must Dos for students:<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tLearn to be positive.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tLearn to relax.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTalk to family and friends.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tDo your best and stop worrying.&nbsp; Result is not the ultimate decisive factor.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tIt is more important to choose the next options.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tFind out and update with wide and varied career choices.&nbsp; Invariably the decision should not be based or influenced by the friends.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tFor an average performer or below average, skill based\/vocational courses. are best choice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<u>High risk Behaviour: Drug abuse, self harm, aggression<\/u><\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBasic Features<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tIt is behaviour that is potentially harmful to self or others.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tBehaviour relating to consumption and abuse of psychotropic drugs or commonly used medicines like cough syrups, sleeping pills, painkillers, without prescription.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tBehaviour related to smoking and consumption of alcohol. Self-harming behaviour like Suicide, Wrist slashing, hitting self, Starving deliberately etc.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tHarm to others in the form of abusive and aggressive Behaviour like rash driving or violence to others in any form.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<u>Dos &amp; Don&rsquo;ts<\/u><\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<u>Dos:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tDiscourage the Behaviour.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tKeep communication channels open<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTalk about the negative and long-term effects.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTeach (quick) relaxation\/breathing<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTeach anger management<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTeach to evaluate consequences.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTalk about the need for sharing this information with parents\/teachers.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tMake the child understand that monitoring by parents or counselors is essential for early recovery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<u>Don&rsquo;ts:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tDo no prescribe medication.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tDo not punish or reprimand harshly.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tDo not moralize or made person feel guilty.&nbsp; Help him to think of it as a problem needing help.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAssertively say &lsquo;No&rsquo; to student&rsquo;s demands for taking drugs like cough syrup, pills etc. to relieve anxiety or improve concentration.&nbsp; Even short-term, temporary relief with the help of these drugs should be highly discouraged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<u>Handling Suicide<\/u><\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe student who is calling is seriously considering you as the last resort and hence it is important to be careful and helpful. A lot many suicides are impulsive while others are well planned. Impulsive students are likely to decide on the spur of the moment. Hence it is important to buy time.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\tCommon feelings in suicide<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tA crisis that causes intense suffering and feeling of hopelessness and helplessness.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tConflict between survival and unbearable stress.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tNarrowing of patient&rsquo;s perceived options.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tA wish to escape (it is an escape rather than a going-towards).<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTo punish self and\/or to punish others with guilt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>\n\tIndicators for increased chance for suicide<\/h2>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tWithdrawal Behaviour for few days<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tMention of suicide repeatedly.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tSuicide note<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tChanges in eating and sleeping patterns<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tA history of serious psychological problems.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tA history of impulsive, poorly controlled and destructive Behaviour.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tA history of continuing academic problems and learning difficulties.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAdjustment difficulties with family, school, peers etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHelping suicidal adolescent<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tEstablish rapport<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAllow the student to narrate his\/her own story<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tUse age appropriate language<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTactful questions. Avoid leading questions e.g. &ldquo;you don&rsquo;t want to kill yourself&rdquo;<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tObtain detailed description of any suicidal plan ask about availability and lethality<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tSmooth movement from one topic to another<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>\n\tInterventions<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>\n\t\tCommunicate that people do get through this &ndash; there are other children who feel as badly as he\/she feels now.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAdvise the child to give himself\/herself some time e.g., &ldquo;I will wait 24 hours before I do anything&rdquo;.&nbsp; Or a week.&nbsp; Suggest that feelings and actions are two different things &ndash; just because you feel like harming \/ killing yourself, doesn&rsquo;t mean that you have to actually do it right this minute.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tPeriodically, keeping in touch over the phone will reduce the intent of ending their lives. Counseling needs to be practical and useful.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tLong lectures with a moralistic tone are not advised. These make the already depressed student guiltier and his intent stronger.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tThe student should be advised to contact a professional counselor as soon as possible. If not efforts should be made to encourage him to meet his teachers or school counselors or talk to his parents.
