  •  It is amazing to see such little boys having so much of determination to fight with the difficulties of life. With no parents and no one to help them, the work they are doing is beyond one’s imagination. Nicola, who is just thirteen years old and Jacopo, twelve, did every kind of work from shining shoes, selling fruit, newspapers, conducting tourists around the town, and running errands even during these summer days, under the hot sun. One windy midnight, it was amazing to see them sitting on the stone pavement at the deserted Square waiting for the bus to come so that they could sell the left over newspapers. It is really worth appreciating that they are doing so much of hard work so that they can earn enough to pay the hospital bills where their sister is getting treated for tuberculosis. I have immense respect for their spirit of not giving up easily.

  • 'The Frost king'  was the name of the first book Helen wrote.

She was charged with plagiarism as it was believed that her story was similar to that of Miss Canby's 'The Frost Fairies'.

Miss Anne Sullivan, her teacher helped her overcome the shock of being charged with plagiarism.

  • Ans. Miss Anne Mansfield Sullivan had the greatest influence on the life, character and achievements of Helen Keller. She gave a new direction, meaning and purpose to Helen's dark life. Miss Sullivan inherited all those traits and characteristics that go in making a perfect teacher. She was a picture of tireless patience . It was her constant encouragement, help and guidance that made Helen Keller first deaf and blind in the world to earn a bachelor degree.

Anne Sullivan arrived at Keller's house in March 1887. She immediately began to teach Helen to communicate by spelling words into her hand, beginning with "d-o-l-l" for the doll. It was Miss Sullivan who unfolded and developed Helen's skills and possibilities. It was Sullivan's genius as a teacher, her sympathy and loving tact which made learning so beautiful and interesting for Helen Keller. She felt that her being was inseparable from her student. All that was the best in Helen Keller had been awakened by the loving touch of Miss Sullivan. Anne Sullivan stayed as a companion to Helen Keller long after she taught her.

  • Ans. Dr. J. Julian Chisolen was an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist. Helen Keller's family approach him to consult about Keller's illness and for some advice. He further sent them to Alexandar Graham Bell who was working with the deaf children at that time. Bell advised them to contact the Perkins Institute for the Blind. On reaching there, the school’s director put Helen under the charge of their former student Anne Sullivan who herself was visually impaired.

  • Ans. The life story of a deaf and blind person makes for an inspirational read because it bears testimony to the powers of the human will and endurance in the face of adversities. It is the account of a human being's exceptional powers of perseverance which enables the person to overcome all odds to triumph in life. Helen Keller could neither see nor hear but her achievements belie her physical limitations.

Her intellectual capabilities and aesthetic sensibilities could not be constrained by her physical disadvantages, her thirst for knowledge was unquenchable and her love of life, human or natural, boundless. It is interesting and inspiring to read the story of her life because she triumphed against all adversities with grace and learned from her mistakes. Nothing could stop her from charting the course of her life which is a lesson for us in overcoming our obstacles. She took life in her stride and strove towards progress.

There is a lot to learn from even reading about a person without the powers of vision or hearing but looks at life in such a positive manner. It is easy to complain or give up, the real test lies in enduring and continuing until we win. The greatness in her personality stemmed from the desire to overcome all that obstructed her path to progress. She was determined to succeed and she did, this is what makes her tale an inspiring story.

Mirror poem summary....class 10

  • Ans.

    • In this poem, a mirror describes its existence and its owner, who grows older as the mirror watches.

    • The mirror first describes itself as “silver and exact.” It forms no judgements, instead merely swallowing what it sees and reflecting that image back without any alteration.

    • The mirror is not cruel, “only truthful.” It considers itself a four-cornered eye of a god, which sees everything for what it is. Most of the time, the mirror looks across the empty room and meditates on the pink speckled wall across from it. It has looked at that wall for so long that it describes the wall as “part of my heart.”

    • The image of the wall is interrupted only by people who enter to look at themselves and the darkness that comes with night. The mirror imagines itself as a lake. A woman looks into it, trying to discern who she really is by gazing at her reflection. Sometimes, the woman prefers to look at herself in candlelight or moonlight, but these are “liars” because they mask her true appearance.

    • Only the mirror (existing here as lake) gives her a faithful representation of herself. Because of this honesty, the woman cries and wrings her hands. Nevertheless, she cannot refrain from visiting the mirror over and over again, every morning.

    • Over the years, the woman has “drowned a young girl” in the mirror, and now sees in her reflection an old woman growing older by the day. This old woman rises toward her out of the mirror like “a terrible fish.”
