1. In photosynthesis, the sun’s energy is converted to chemical energy by photosynthetic organisms. However, the various wavelengths in sunlight are not all used equally in photosynthesis.
2. Instead, photosynthetic organisms contain light-absorbing molecules called pigments (such as chlorophyll, carotenoids etc.) that absorb only specific wavelengths of visible light, while reflecting others.
3. In green plants having chlorophyll, only the red and blue ends of the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum are used in photosynthesis.
4. The reflection and transmission of the middle of the spectrum gives the leaves their green visual color.
