As the diference of time between the eastern most point and the western most poin of India is 2hrs 82°30' E is taken as IST so that the whole of india would have a unform time.IST=GMT+5 1/2 hours means that the time of India is 5 1/2 hours more than that of Greenwhich meridian time.
