Charge sheet refers to a formal police record showing the names of each person brought into custody, the nature of the accusations, and the identity of the accusers. It is also known as four part charging instrument containing:
a)information about the accused and the witnesses;
b) the charges and specifications;
c) The preferring of charges and their referral to a summary;
d) For the trial record
An investigation includes recording statements of witnesses and collecting different kinds of evidence. On the basis of the investigation, the police are required to form an opinion. If the police think that the evidence points to the guilt of the accused person, then they file a charge-sheet in the court. It is not the job of the police to decide whether a person is guilty or innocent, that is for the judge to decide.
