Ethanol is the second member of alcohols. Its formula is C2H5OH. It is a colorless liquid having a pleasant smell and a burning taste. It does not contain hydrogen ions therefore, it is a neutral compound.

Ethanoic acid is the second member of carboxylic acids. Its formula is CH3COOH. It is a colorless liquid having a sour taste and a smell of vinegar. It is acidic n nature therefore, it turns red litmus blue.

To differentiate between ethanol and ethanoic acid chemically, perform the reaction of both the compounds with sodium hydrogencarbonate.

Ethanol gives no reaction with it while ethanoic acid gives brisk efferevesence on reation with it. When this gas is passed over lime water, it turns milky indicating the evolution of carbon dioxide gas.
